This is the dumbest problem I've ever encountered. Trying to install Win2k
for a friend on a Sony PCG-9211 laptop. For starters, the laptop doesn't
even show up on Sony's site. Secondly, the video card (although recognized
by Windows 98) isn't recognized by Win2k. I've Googled, I've searched
HotBot, I've searched AltaVista. I've Deja'd. I can't find any information
about this laptop, much less what it has in the way of hardware. The user
has lost the manual, which is a shame, obviously. But it shouldn't be THIS
hard. I just want to know what kind of video card it has so I know what
kind of driver I need to use.

Any idea?

I thought Google had a lock on knowledge! I found one reference to RAM
for Sony VAIO PCG-F580 as the 9211.

Yeah. I thought that was just coincidence or that those were two separate
models that used the same ram, but I called Sony last night and found out
that one number (9211) is the "internal" number and the other is the
"external" number. Huh?

Anyway, now I know how to find my drivers.

I don't think Sony knows quite what is up. I call them the serial tag
model number and the keyboard model number. Sony's registration
procedure asks for model number and neither worked. I had to make a
voice call and hunt around for someone who knew how to register the
computer; it was four emails over 30 days before someone figured out how
to do the data entry.

Excuse me a moment while I vent a little:
There are two model numbers on a Sony - one on the base of the
laptop that can't be seen without closing the lid and turning it
upside down, and one that's in plain sight while the laptop is in use
on the display or keyboard bezel. IBM does the EXACT SAME THING, and
we don't have posts from ThinkPad newbies saying they can't find
drivers for their 2675-21U. I don't get why this throws my fellow Sony
users so often.
I know, this isn't your laptop Mr. Crawford, but your post was just
that last straw. We now return you to...
