I am having a network of some 150 computers. One Windows 2003 server is running as Active Directory, DNS and DHCP.

I have joined 31 computers to the domain. But then now am not able to join any more.

The error message is

A domain controller for the domain XXX could not be contacted.
Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly
If the name is correct, click Details for troubleshhoting information.

I can ping the dns server with its name with the domain extensions, but when I try to ping with the name only, it says cannot find host.

Any help will highly be appreciated.

Sounds like a DNS problem. Ensure the DNS addresses used include the Server.
You may need to temporarily make the primary DNS the Server.
