I have an older toshiba satellite laptop that had a SATA 1.5 gb/s hard drive that died. Do I need to replace it with the same hard drive or can I upgrade to the SATA 3.0 gb/s?

You can use any SATA drive that fits in your laptop. SATA 2 (3g/s) and SATA 3 (6g/s) are backward compatable with SATA 1 (1.5g/s).
