Power Supply - Dell XPS 420 (UK)

Please can you help me or point me in the right direction for my help?
I am looking to buy...

Silencer 500 Dell
Mfr. PN: PPCS500D

but can't seem to find it available in the UK? I am led to believe I need this particular power supply as it is an upgrade for my Dell XPS 420 desktop system - it's a perfectly compatible upgrade for my PC.

The nearest part i can find on the UK market is

OCZ PC Power & Cooling Silencer 500W EPS12V ATX PSU (UK)
Mfr. PN: PPCS500-UK

The big question - will the 2nd power supply part be compatible with Dell XPS 420 system?

the pc power an cooling is a recommended replecement for the dells
August 26, 2009 8:04:15 PM

yes but I can't for the life of me find one for sale (or decent shipping price) to the UK.

I will have a look at some dutch websites to see if i can find the Pc Power & Cooling silencer 500 dell then...

Another option you have is the ANTEC EA500 or EA650...

both fit perfect on an XPS 410/420 ........

yea, im just lettin him know that the EA's work fine since I have an XPS 410 and a 420 and both PC's have been upgraded from the ground up, starting with the PSU's....
August 26, 2009 8:27:03 PM

right EA it is then!

I was led to believe the wiring spec of something else (I'm now clued on PSU, can you tell?) so you could pretty much be stuck with the PC Power & Cooling (OCZ?) Silencer 500 Dell

great! just an after thought OvrClkr - what kind of video card are you running in your 420? - I am a little hesitant to take the plunge on dual slot options - ideally I'd like to get Radeon HD 4770 but may consider getting HD 4850 (I've seen the latter today on ebuyer for £70 UK) if the buggers will fit :o

The 410 has an HD 4850 (XFX) and the 420 has a GTS 250 (BFG).... both XPS's are powered by an EA500 with power to spare......

wow thanks again OvrClkr and obsidian86!

sorry to bother you guys again - i've been browsing all night, no gaming yet

almost done, think I'll order EA650 simply cos the price I've found is great, pretty sure I'll plump for XFX HD 4850 1GB I've found at £80

I imagine the 4850 should just fit in the XPS 420 case OK?I've got plenty of room above the card but will it fit in long ways, worried it might not fit with the large CPU cooler I've got above the quad core processor

do the 410 / 420 differ by much in terms of how much space they have for gfx card?

any chance of taking a photo of your 410 and 420 with the side off? wouldnt mind seeing if you have the same processor heat sink job as me

I am almost there but total upgrade of £140 is heck of a lot of money for me

I do appreciate all your help, cheers!! :wahoo:

yea no problem.... once I get home I will take a pic and show you......

August 26, 2009 9:49:47 PM

just thinking should i take this thread elsewhere cos it has digressed to gfx card thread?

if not, given my max settings of 1280x1024 would i be as well to stick with 4770 higher core clock, price seems to be about the same so it's 4770 vs 4850 (both XFX, the 4850 is cheaper!)

ruddy decisions!

thank you!

awesome pics, that card is looking sexy!

my problem will be the cards i have below, TV tuner card I can ditch as I now have USB stick dual digital tuner but I also have my soundcard and LAN card below where your 250 is

i suppose I can get USB wireless adapter to do away with the LAN card too
a b ) Power supply
August 27, 2009 2:43:36 PM

well that should not be an issue, there should be at least 1mm of clearance room between all the cards.....

as far as USB wireless adapter, I would not know.... I have always used WiFi PCI-cards....

i maintain your card in photo is so sexy compared to my 4650 (yuk) which cant cope with BF2 at medium settings. i shall be trying that L4D soon though, looks good - also do want to get COD4 - i'll try joining you for a game if we play at same times

questions...

I couldnt see your PCI LAN card on that photo so i thought you had removed it

you clearly have different spec systems in the 410 and 420 and although you might not be able to compare accurately which do you prefer, the XFX HD 4850 or the BFG GTS 250 OC ?

drooling at the impending purchase of EA650 and new gfx card !

and thanks for those photos again!

I would say flip a coin, I have both and they are the same IMO.......it's basically a matter of taste....

I would rather have you save up some more money and get either a 4870 or a GTX 260.... the performance that you get for the price is amazing.... but if your budget is 125.00$ or less than go ahead with the 4850 or 250.....

oooh XFX 4870 512mb found for £90 (just £10 more than the 4850) but I heard these run rather hot and with the other cards in my case (lan card, X-Fi sound card) I though i might struggle for air flow - I guess as long as there is nothing much sitting above the gfx card it should suck plenty of air through the cooling

i shall be taking some photos of my case later too (i'm writing this on the 420 now)

cheers!

The XFX 4870 normally runs cool if you have some decent cable management and airflow.... for that price it's a no-brainer....

I'm right in thinking the EA650 has 2 x PCI E 6 pin cables?

thanks for all your help getting me here!

bah goods still not here - last time round they came at 7.45am! new i should have stayed in bed - I have Stella Artois head now!

apologies for the low quality pics on my 2mp phone camera

here's my current cards - once i sort the cabling out i should be good to go with 4870 when it arrives

couple of questions related to the next 2 shots...

http://s660.photobucket.com/albums/uu329/cps1974/?action=view¤t=DSC00045.jpg

it seems as though the black and gray cables you can see connected to the audio / video front panel above are connected at the other ends to my m/board (grey) and tv tuner card (black), given i never use the audio / video front panel should i disconnect these - indeed the grey one plugged into my m/board now was unconnected when i looked so I decided to connect it up - can i just remove these if they are not in use?

http://s660.photobucket.com/albums/uu329/cps1974/?action=view¤t=DSC00046.jpg

and my last question for time being for folks with far more knowledge than me... when I get the new PSU should I leave all the current connectors / cables in place and just replace the PSU block or do I need to remove all and reconnect with the new cables / connectors that come with new PSU?

thanks again!

please hurry up parcel delivery man !!

No worries, I can see the pics just fine by clicking on them...

As far as the audio and vid cables, I would leave them alone.. You never know if they will be needed in the future... My front audio ports are connected to my sound-card due to I use my headphones almost every day.... If the cables bother you then yea you can disconnect them and tuck them away for future use.... It's all up to you....

Hehe i see you are kinda desperate for your shipment to come in...... I get the same way too trust me.... ;)

As far as the PSU, yes you have to disconnect everything, remove the old PSU, install the new one and reconnect everything back up.... It's really easy just make sure you label the connectors on your existing PSU just in case you need to know where the new one's go....

hey mate!

it all worked out great! i'll take some photos when i get out of bed proper (cant sleep, 6.30am here) now have XPS 420 with EA650 and HD 4870

my stupid because i clicked on the wrong ship to address - it went to my mothers house (10 mins walk away) but you should have seen my face before i realised - iwent on the courier track site and noticed soemone had signed for the goods and their status was delivered, i was swearing some bugger had stole them!

all seems to be well, 1 minor problem is the ea650 lacking ATA connectors (for my CDRW and DVDRW drives) so I need to purchase 2 x LP4 (molex ?) to ATA connectors

otherwise all good cos i own the original disc of Battlefield 2 and I can play from a mini DVD image file I have !!

many many thanks, your help has been great! i now have now upgraded my XPS 420
August 30, 2009 6:15:14 AM

can I use any of the spare molex - and where you have several molex in a chain must I use the 1st or last one? or any?

you should have seem my smiling face yesterday when i was done switching the PSU ! can't thank you enough OvrClkr

August 31, 2009 8:49:40 AM
