I have an old Acer Aspire 5670 with WinXP SP 2 that crashed and wont boot up in any boot mode. I've heard that you can run Linux off a USB thumb drive and recover data as long as hard drive works. Is this a possible solution? I really don't want to give Geek Squad $259.00 dollars.

you can do several things.

first thing I would do is go buy a 2.5" sata/ide to usb converter (about 20$)

then remove hdd from laptop and copy the files you need with the converter to another computer.

something similar to this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...

laptops can be imtimidating to work on but usually the hard drive removes with just 1 screw.
