Is it better to have a monitor with Full HD 1080p (1920x1080, 16:9) than a monitor with 16:10 aspect ratio for gaming? I'm planning to get ASUS VH242H.
It depends. If you want the best detail possible you need to find something with the highest resolution. I am not sure if you know this already, but just to be sure - The resolution represents the number of pixels displayed on the screen, so 1920x1080 = 2,073,600 pixels, if thats the monitors native resolution. Anything below that is just being scaled to fit, and thats why you lose the detail in the picture.
My Dell 3008WFP monitor can support 16:9 & 16:10. The highest resolution it can support is 2560x1600 which only some types of media can support. Obviously, its overkill for movies, since the highest resolution they are recorded in are 1920x1080. But for other types of media, like video games, having this high of a resolution is a noticeable difference in terms of graphics and detail.
Really, it just depends on what you will be using it for most of the time.
Depends on the game's widescreen support, there is a benefit for games without widescreen support (16:10) as it wont be as stretch as if you forced widescreen in 16:9 and you would get more room if you didn't mess up aspect raito. It would be better to get 16:9 over 16:10 if you record the game due to base 16 encoding and many 16:10 monitors lack base 16 resolutions on the y axis.
Really i think 16:10 is better just for the more vertical screen makes it better for general usage.
