I plan to purchase a motherboard next month. I'm building a core I5 system. What brand and model of motherboard do you guys recommend? I want an Asus motherboard but that's too expensive. I was about to purchase a gigabyte motherboard but I had to cancel it because newegg.com did not receive my check.

There are a few p55 motherboard articles you should read in the articles section. There is not that much difference in price between Gigabyte and ASUS usually. Those seem to be the most solid brands if you are not looking at EVGA (which is generally more expensive). There are a few different models of p55 motherboard for each brand so maybe you werent comparing the correct ASUS to that Gigabyte?

I guess it's down to what you want to do, like overclocking, or wanting a Crossfire/SLI setup. For something basic, you can check out this Gigabyte:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128405&Tpk=p55%20ud2

Alternatively, if you want a full ATX board that will give you 8x/8x Crossfire support, then there's this ECS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813135244&Tpk=ecs%20p55h-a

However, ECS doesn't get too much love around these parts, and a recent review on this website showed that overclocking with it could end with a bit of a bang.
