Easy poll. Which chipset for graphics was your favorite oldie? For Ati, anything before the 9800/9700 series, Nvidia, the 5900/5800 series, and a lot of other manufactuers from older times. If you see any chipsets missing (which I likely forgot a few or more), let me know.

I liked the classic Geforce2 GTS for the most part, as it was my first serious graphics card. (unless you consider a Creative tnt1 to be serious O.o) Second, i'd probably put in a vote for the Radeon 8500. Good card on line with the Geforce3, and way ahead in AA and Aniso.

I voted for the Voodoo3. Not that it's the best chipset I've had, but it sure impressed me the most when I upgraded to it. My jaw dropped when I first used that card.

Agreed! Although my Voodoo 3 2000 ran pretty damn hot, she made my black undies turn white at the time.

(Poo Here)
I guess its all subjective... i like the TNT2 as my first serious card WAS a tnt2, and at the time the sweet 32bit graphics poo-ed on the voodoo's 16bit.

It was also my first major overclocking attempt.
The Diamond V770 came stock as 125core/150mem, and i got the sucker up to 157core/205mem... man it ran burningly hot! (no active fan mind)
Never died though. :)

While I agree Voodoo 3 was excellent, especially when you ran silky smooth Glide games (finally games optimized for a GL API that actually RAN fully smooth even when they had so much effects), the geForce 3 was the epitome of a new graphics world. It brought shaders.

I still have my Voodoo3, in my works PC. Dropped it in when CS sessions during lunch took off. Beats an 815 video anyway.

Should I vote for GeForce2 MX?

TNT 2... for its time it was an awsome GPU.

I also like my Ti4200 although I'm going to replace it this month.

TNT2 was not a GPU.

Wow, my uncle's P3 750 with the V3 3000 absolutely sucked, it ran at around 20FPS most of the time!

It wasn't? What was it then? A video chipset? Then why isn't the GeForce2 a video chipset?

It processes graphical data... how do you want to call that? I call it a GPU... I also call the GeForce FX a GPU and not the name nVidia gave it to it (VPU).

GPUs came with geForces.
Previously it was just video accelerator, and for some reason they never were "graphical processing units". All I know was that GPUs came when geForces came.
Wish we had a pro on this issue though.

Eh??? Like what? Aquanox or something? I haven't seen a Voodoo based system that has genuinely "sucked".

I want to see an Ati Radeon 99999 Ultra Pro, based on the AtiRage core. And people wonder how a Geforce3 is better than a Geforce4 Mx...

You don't actually let the companies decide the names, do you?

What if Intel said that only the Pentium series are real CPUs and the rest are just calculation accelerators? For me everything that calculates graphical data only is a GPU.

Voodoo4 4500! It's not a screaming fast card. It was merely an enhanced Voodoo3 (32-bit support, higher res textures, 32MB RAM, etc), however, I still own one and I'll never forget 3dfx as long as I have it.

No, I did mean CS. It still plays pretty badly on his 750 in 1024*768.

Yeah but that implies new DX9 GPUs are really as they call them, VPUs.

I do believe they called them GPUs now because they CAN process Vertex and Pixels with new effects on them. In the past most of that work was done on CPUs if I am not mistaken.

Vertex and pixel shaders where only fully hardware calculated with the GeForce3 introduction.

Don't see GPU as some kind of brand name, see them as a name of the FUNCTION of a chip.

My CPU fan spins so fast that it creates a wormhole

Reply to svol

Indeed, which is why I am saying they should only be used from geForce 1 and up as well as Radeons. Anything less is not a real GPU.

GeForce1 didn't have any shaders though... and they did almost the same as the TNT2.

I call everything that has the only purpose to process graphics a GPU.

The Voodoo2 was awesome when it first came out. I bought it for... $300 I think, back in mid 98. It was the first time I really experienced 3d acceleration and it was great. It had some staying power too.

Could be due to real programmable T&L. (calling it the GPU, the GF1)

But the TNT and TNT2 already had (partly) programmable T&L.

And Voodoo3 and higher cards sertaintly did almost all graphics processing... wouldn't you call those GPUs too. Or you don't do that because nVidia says... bla bla bla?

I dunno, I honestly don't lol!
Wish there were a more technical guy who remembered the history of the geForce1, we might perhaps know more.

Just ignore what companies say and use the term purely technical.

A very unique and completely unsolveable freeze.
and i have tried EVERYTHING to fix it.

Here is a brief summary.
While playing 3d games the screen will freeze, requiring a reset to fix it.
However, it ONLY happens in resolutions under 1280x960, and only in full screen mode.
If i run windowed or at 1280x960 i can play games for 8 hours at a time till my eyes bleed!

Ive tried:
running completely stock speeds.
catalysts 2.4 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.5, omega 3.4 and omega 3.5. ONLY the 2.4's will work properly at the lower resolutions. (but cauz they are so old its not worth it)
DX 8 & 9 versions
Fresh winXP install, only XP, SP1, video drivers and via chipset drivers installed
Multiple chipset driver versions.
Tweaked ALL my bios AGP settings
Tweaked ALL the eyecandy settings ON/OFF.
Run using plug and pray monitor and also specific viewsonic INF files.

Its the only bug ive been unable to solve.
VERY VERY strange.
Plus its very repeatable.
I have a Serious sam savegame where if i walk forward 10m it will crash, same place every time.
but its completely fine at 1280x960, 1280x1024 or 1600x1200.

now hows that for damn wierd.

You mean an addon card like the Voodoo2? That would be a card that takes out specific jobs of the original GPU... like only 3D calculating.

Maybe it's just a problem with the game. Have you checked to see if the game has a patch release?

yes. patched and unpatched.
It also occurs in freelancer, though i dont have a savegame specific crash spot... but rest assured within 20 minutes of flying around it WILL crash with exactly the same symptoms.

It occurs equally with direct3d and openGL too mind.

No... but I do know it is possible. You can interlink two Voodoo2s (expensive though) and then connect them to the primary (2D) videocard. But I don't think anyone actyually combined the Voodoo2 chip and a regular 2D chip on the same PCB.
