Dell Inspiron 8600

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 running XP as an OS. I pulled out the dvd drive to see if it was for dvds and as it turns out it is a dvd+rw. The only problem is when I put in a dvd it will not play it. Is this a software problem or is it designed to play and rip a CD, because that's all it will do. It might burn a CD as well, I have not tried?
