actually i would keep the case and get thishttp://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=343&name=Processors-Desktops =190 cpu
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 817341011= 750 pwr supply=90
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813128384 =mb 130
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820227290 = 8gb ram for 90 orhttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220335=4gb for 25 after rebates
and of course http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814102809 =289 for a 4850x2
but you could switch the graphics for somthing along the lines of two 4770's or two 4870's maybe a gtx285 or hell even a 4870x2 and youd still be around the same price. so total with tax is about 912 dollars thats with 8 gigs and a 4850 x2 I find that for bigger budget go i7 but for smaller budgets go Phenom II!!

Not hardly. No offense but the OP has twice the build posted as that one you just laid out. If he's like a lot of people on here including myself he's going with a one card set up, and in another year if that card stops getting the fps he's looking for he's going to get rid of it and get another card.
i see but the only reason i put that build up is because i saw a gt x 260 and thought hey this guy needs a better graphic(s) card(s) and i thought a better power supply wouldn't be too bad either. and all that in my mind could only be accomplished (without using cheap and unreliable components) by going the Phenom II route. besides the i7 does much better with 2 cards and when i mean better i mean MUCH better. http://www.tomshardware.com/review [...] ,2156.html

You make some valid points. This build includes a single factory over clocked gtx 275 with a decent h/s and thermal compound. Throw a couple of $5 Masscool 120mm case fans in this build, and over clock it to 3.6 and let the games begin.
It will be cheaper to build a quadcore Phenom AM3 system with an even more powerful gfx card .
The same money goes further for gaming with amd . The CPU/ram/mb combo will be a $100 less and by spending that extra money on a better gfx card the system will perform better at gaming with smoother game play , and higher average and minimum fps , but marginally worse at encoding and multimedia apps.
i like your build much better than the op's but, crossfire/sli let that i7 stretch its legs because in my eyes it seems like a waste unless you upgrade that graphics card to two gts 250's for 250 1 gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814133266 or
2 4850's 1 gb for 220.http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102832

thats exactly what i was trying to prove with my original am2+ build. but i mean the switch to ddr3 isnt that big of a performance boost to begin with and the 940 has an unlocked multi too but if you really just want this for gaming then get a 720 and overclock the hell out of it and stick a 4870x2 on it and you have a beast thats cheap. but would the 720 bottleneck the x2 too much hmm......

And you are planning on what resolution? For 25xxx res, it's not near close. For 16xxx res, it's almost already overkill. Plan from the load, then get the motor.
I like Why_Me build except for the case and PSU. I would get a case with more room inside for better cooling, working in and future expansion such as this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811133056 this is a good price for this case. Don’t skimp on the PSU it is by far the most important part of your computer, I’ve found over the years it is the one part that caused most of my computer problems, so I would go with something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817153072
------------------------------ASUS Striker II Extreme , C2D Q9450 OC 3.4, 8 Gig Memory, EVGA 8800GTX Triple SLI, Thermaltake 1000W PSU, Thermaltake Armor + Case, Acer 24" LCD, Water Cooled, 12 Foot DVI Cable, Vista 64 Bit SP2

about that psu i think it is a little out of his price range besides with powersupplys i always go with either pc power and cooling or corsair. they just make amazing power supplys. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817341011 this is the one i like for this build.
