Hey there guys!!
I have been searching through the forums here for a while trying to compile some information as far as what I want to build for my first ever computer.. And I finally decided that I just needed to come out and just ask my questions..
To start out, I am into video editing and until now I have only been able to work with Windows movie maker on a old laptop .. but I have worked with Vegas at school and have decided that I am going to build this computer to run Vegas as my editing program of choice, and I am currently not shooting in HD but would like to some time in the future.. and I am going to run Vista 64-bit so that I can use as Much RAM as possible.. My budget is somewhere around the $800 mark.. so any help with my questions would be appreciated...
My next questions come in the form of Hard drives, I was going to run a small capacity 10,000 RPM boot Drive with either a raid array of two storage drives or a single TB drive.. but then realized that 10k RPM drives are way expensive, And then there are also the SSD's but they are waay expensive to.. SO I want opinions on what I should do for a Hard drive situation??
Next It a Graphics card? I am pretty clueless here.. I dont do any gaming, (just stupid online ones ) But I know that I will be running dual monitors, nothing huge or super high quality or large.. but I may even be dabbling into running the computer with our HDTV as a monitor.. and I would be editing so I am clueless as to where I land in the realm of graphics cards.. I know you can drop a ton on them, or get buy with integrated... but I just want opinions on what I need..
And I really don't do much for audio editing, so I am just assuming the on board sound on my board would be enough.
I will be running a regular DVD/CD drive... nothing to special I need there right?
And I believe I have covered everything except for the case/PSU I figured that A 650W or so would be fine.. Right?
and If I could find a case/PSU combo that would be fine.. I really am not that worried about looks for this computer.. I just want something that runs cool and stable.. and I also wanted to ask if you guys thought I needed any extra fans to move air and keep everything cool.. this is one where I know you guys could help.. I may dabble with some "beginner" OC'ing so i would assume that I should invest in some extra fans..
*EDITED*
I have decided on a i7 920 as apposed to the Q9550
so like I said I am shooting for right around $800 or so.. not super tight on that but Around there would be nice.. so thanks in advice guys!!
get the q9550
get a western digital caviar black
get an ati hd4670
get a corsair 650w
try holding off on the os for win7, it will be out toward the end of october

but... if you were to go with a q9550 instead of 920 and a better case for the sake of cooling i would recommend that. oh and of course that means new MOBO. and as far as combo deals go those vary from month to month and if you wait till W7, which isnt a bad idea, you might have to be willing to spend more or less. Oh and Caviar black series is Fast, the Velociraptors are only a little better to the bench's ive seen
sweet build there wormy!!!
that is sweet that I could do a i7 for around my price and still with good components.. and seeing how cheap a i7 could be built, I think I am revising my original idea and going to go the i7 as apposed to the Q9550 and that way I can upgrade in the future and not have to worry about it with Intel discontinuing the 775..
The only thing I noticed was that the case is a micro-atx, am I missing some thing? You cant run a ATX in a micro-ATX case can you? I really am not worried about size here and wouldnt a bigger case be better for cooling? so my guess is that I will go for a bigger case..
and why shouldnt I go for OEM vista 64-bit with a windows 7 upgrade coupon for $110? that seams to be the way to go to me atleast.

Get two of the largest WD Black drives you can afford. Use one for data and partition the other one to about 100GB or so and use it for the OS. If you leave the rest of the OS drive unused, you've "short stroked" the drive and are getting performance that is pretty darn close to the 10K drives. This is because (a) you're using the outermost cylinders of the drive which have the fastest transfer rate, and (b) the access arm will never have to travel more than a few percent of the span of the drive and therefore you'll have fast access times.
Later when you can afford an SSD you can then redeploy the OS drive for more data or put it into an external USB enclosure and use it for backup.

You didnt miss anything...I just picked out a case from an excel spreadsheet from a comp I was building in it and it was a micro ATX ....yeah you will want ATX...if the upgrade to windows 7 is free then sure that will b fine as long as the version of windows 7 your upgrading to is the one u want....and I know u said you wanted a 650 watt PS but thats really not needed unless your getting a high end video card
errr...I didnt read all threat..(no time sory..) but I spot that u want Single 1 TB HDD? DO NOT DO IT... Take 2x500 gb in Raid or better SCSI Hdds... and buy urself external BACK UP HDD too coz believe me or no... U gona cry if ur HDD die :]
Also go for i7 cpu... for video editing u got multithreating so more cores/more threats better

ok thanks for all the help guys.. I guess I will go with two 500gb harddrives in a raid array and partition one off to run my OS on.. and I am going to go with vista 64-bit as my OS..
and wormy no worries about the case.. thats pretty easy to find for myself.. I am just going to get a fairly cheap case and buy two extra 80mm fans for a HUGE price of $1.99 each.. haha
and thanks for the info on the PS, I wont ever run a expensicve video card so I guess the 650 wasnt needed.. I was just being careful.. butter to much then not enough.. but if you guys say 550 is goo dthen sweet!!!

Just lil tip about FANS.... Bigger 120mm+=Low spin = Low noise = good performarce > Small fans 80mm = High spin = High Noise = Good performarce
About the PSU...550 is risky low...for me atleast... u know that After Effect /Photoshop etc etc are using Graphics Card more and more so think of getting stronget PSU just in case u gona get strong Graphics Card... :x
ok thanks for the fan help.. I will look for a case that I can do 120mm fans in .. and I still dont know quite yet about PSU..
but I found an ad on my local craigslist and a guy has 2 WD TB HDDS and a 750Gb HDD and he wants $70 each for the TB And $50 for the 750gb should I slap a $100 bill in his hands and walk away with one of each or should I take both of the TB's?
It depends... there is no info about these HDDS...(or im blind) so if u could find out how fast they are/cash/ serial number etc etc so we can check reviews on the inet... so far for me its Ca in a Bag...so duno wot it is inside...

This site calculates how much power he needs......its says he is only going to b using 253 watts
If he ever wants to use CUDA he can just upgrade his PS if he needs to...I would have recommended him a smaller PS but for the price after rebate even this 1 gives him room to breate if he wants to add a video card...unless he wants SLI.....which does not fit into his budget
