Hi all! :hello:

am upgrading my rig below (in sig) to the new rig writen under this.

4G Kit(2x2G) DDR3 1333
GA-EX58-UD4P
Core i7 940
HD 4870 x2
850w tough power psu (thermaltake)
thermal take speedo case. (the advanced package, forgot what model number     )

what do you think? any good? :??:

am planning to over clock so i will buy a good cooler for the cpu. does a cooler for a 45nm (eg e8500) fit the i7? just bought one for my old rig and dont want to have to buy a new one :kaola:

any changes would be good if u could make any.
:p
thank you!

dont bother with the 940. the best value is in the i7920 which is easily overclockable anywhere from 3.2-4ghz.

secondly i would also swap that psu for something like the 550w/650w corsair unless you are planning to go down the crossfire route in the future

and finally you will find your cooler wont fit, however you can by converters to make other types of coolers fit, but be sure to do plenty of research before hand

940 is not worth price premium over 920
core i7 uses triple memory controller meaning you need to use 3 sticks

you can use 3x1g= 3gigs 3x2g= 6gigs and so

Double check the voltage on the memory...I7 needs 1.5 volts or less otherwise you will fry your CPU (memory controller is on the CPU). Some of the older 2x2GB DDR3 kits have higher voltages as they were intended for socket 775 systems.

+1 for the 920
+1 for Corsair brand PSU

i7 runs dual channel just fine, same as all current memory controllers can do single channel.

Core i7 needs 1.65 or less on the memory not 1.5.

I would agree with everyone on getting the Core i7 920 over the i7 940. Also, Intel is not going to be carrying the i7 940 anymore, along with the i7 965ee. They are being replaced by the i7 950 and i7 975ee. The only one still moving forward is the i7 920.

Thermaltake makes good PSU but I would stick with either the Corsair 850 or the PC P&C 910 Silencer. I'm a believer if... I'm going to build a computer... build for future growth since you know you have the money now. So if down the road you want Crossfire, you don't have to upgrade your PSU, along with adding a 2nd card.

What cooler did you buy? E8500 is socket 775 and Core i7 is socket 1366. You might be able to get a socket 1366 adapter for your cooler.

^ well if it doesn't fit he might be able to lower the voltage if he gets a D0 on the stock cooler and then it would probably run in the low 60C's.

Are you going to sell the 4870x2? Then buy 2 GTX 275/85's? That would probably be the cheapest for the price/performance ratio.
And go with a 920. The 940 has a higher stock clock, but the new DO's make it almost obsolete (thus the 950's and the 975's arriving soon).

You'll need a ThermalTake LGA1366 Upg Kit for BigTyp120 VX - part number A100070 to run your Big Typhoon VX on a socket 1366 MB

950!?!? I like... so what does it run on the older boards (meaning x58 :p )
will keep hd4870x2 for a while. untill a x2 comes out for nvidia 300 series. (thinking ahead i know ;) )

@rescawen, actually he will, the i7 950 runs at 3.06ghz with a higher IPC than the e8500 @ 3.16ghz. and the 100mhz won't make much of a difference since there is around 0.5 IPC more on the i7 than on the 45nm core 2's.

Also you have quadruple the threads so it is considerably more future resistant.

Since you were planing on buying a 940 in the first place, just get the i7 920 from tankguys (here--->http://www.tankguys.com/intel-core-i7-920-d0.html)
It's a bit more expensive, but the results will be a higher OC, less power consumption, and less heat.
Lol, or you could try your luck with an i7 920 from Newegg. It's about a 50-50 chance now.

Reply to radiowars

^ it's probably a 95/5 chance at newegg.

Reply to Helloworld_98

im a adelaide guy so no new egg for me. i probably go to my comp store, eagle. cheap reliable and they actually know what a computer is ;)

@radiowars, I meant a 95% chance of getting a D0, probably upto 100% by the end of June since I believe it was their aim to get C0's out of the retail cycle by the end of June.
