To disable the EIST in Win XP, Follow these steps...
1. Go to ControlPanel -> Select Power Options.
2. A properties window appears on the screen Power Options Properties. In that window, under power schemes drop down menu, select Home/ Office Desk. It will automatically disable EIST
The BIOS will call it EIST or speedstep, I don't think there's any other terms for it. Perhaps you should describe the problem you're having so we can try and fix that rather than disabling an otherwise useful feature.
