Is this system capable of using MS Viruualization?

I have a Dell Precision 370, Dual Core, 64bit system (Intel Socket 775 LGA board) running Windows 7 RC1 (32bit).

I (erroneously it seems) assumed this would be capable of using MS Virtualization so I could run Windows XP under Windows 7 but when I tried it I got a message saying my system was not capable of this.

I'm not very hardware knowledgeable and was wondering where I would look to see what this system is capable of. Would running the 64bit version of Windows 7 make a difference (unlikely but I'm hoping).

Forgot to ask, is this a CPU or a CPU/system board capability? If CPU, can I upgrade to a different CPU to get this ability?

It's a CPU capability. At this time the cheapest CPU from Intel that I know of that features it is the E6300 wolfdale, you'll have to check with Dell whether or not your system would support it.

Just download virtualBox from Sun (google) and try again. I'M using it and you don't need a virtualization capable CPU unless you want to virtualize a 64 bits OS.

You can run virtualization without Intel-VT, it's just a tad slower and you lose some security assets and some features etc.

depending of the type of load for a virtual machine, sometime hardware virtualization may slow down the thing too..
