I want to set up two 500Mb drives in RAID0 and one 1Gb drive as RAID1, for performance, security and cost. The MoBo is a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD4 with i7-2600K. The drives are two Seagate ST3500418AS and one Seagate ST31000528AS. Please confirm that this is a good choice and, if possible, please expalin the setup.

  1. So you wanna stripe the two 500's into a 1TB drive, then merge that striped array with a 1TB drive in order to form a mirrored array? I don't think that's possible... Not using the same RAID controller, anyways. Though, I suppose it might be possible to do this within Windows, but that's technically virtual RAID.

I think you'd be better off using all three drives together in the creation of a RAID 5 array, and then leaving the remainder of the 1TB drive normal.
  2. If you did as you state I think you would lose all performance benefit of the RAID 0 part, ie at best it would run the same as 2 x 1Tb drives in Raid 1
