Well, essentially crossfire-x is simply a re-branding of crossfire and alludes to using 3 and 4-way crossfire, which you technically can do with just two PCI-E 8x slots. Anyway a 790FX board with 3 or 4 slots would be what crossfire-x is alluding too, while a board with just 2 8x slots would refer to a crossfire board, though such a board would still be labeled as "crossfire-x" under the current branding.
