Apart from the obvious support for DDR3 ram, what other "gains" do I see. I mean, will a AM3 CPU underperform on a AM2+ motherboard? If so, how much? What is effected?

Regards.

AM3 on AM2+ board may receive a slower HT bus speed but will have the same effective operating frequency. Its a performance hit but a very very small one. I say "may" receive a slower HT bus speed because its model-dependent. Some AM3 models are supposed to use the same HT bus speed as AM2+ models.

To be honest, I wanted to save a bunch of bucks and go for a AM2+ motherboard with 8GB of DDR2 generic ram. I know people are saying go for DDR3, but I see no point if I gain very little.

If what you guys say is true, and its only little gain I loose for going with AM2+ then I'll go with a AM2+

Well DDR2 prices have increased so much that its no longer a lot cheaper than DDR3.

If you were buying a new setup, the only reason not to go with DDR3 was the steep price premium compared with DDR2.
