Ive got an ATI Radeon 4850, 4 gigs of RAM, and a Phenom II 720 @ 3.01GHz. I can play Crysis at 1280x1024, everything on HIGH and 8x AA, but it chops a bit. Its better at 4x AA. Is this normal for my system? I thought Id be able to play on VERY HIGH. What do you all think?

Do you know the difference between 64 bit and 32 bit crysis? Im using Windows 7 64 bit and sometimes when I play Crysis 64bit the graphics have so many anomolies and it looks terrible.

I'm surprised you're 4850 can play with 8xAA. I would not expect a 4850 to ever play at very high. But you are playing at 1280*1024.

In regards to your graphical anomalies, perhaps your video card is overheating? I don't see why it being 64bit would make that happen. I play on vista64 and it looks great.

What do you think the best settings for my system would be? Are you saying that the resolution is low? If I go to manually change the settings the object settings are grayed out and wont let me change them from anything but high.

Isn't the 64bit version of Crysis glitchy? My PC crashed whenever I tried to load up 64bit, so I just used the 32bit version.

1280*1024 is a bit low compared to whats out there, but it also allows you to up your graphics settings and get higher fps. Your monitor is probably limiting this resolution.

I still believe that your graphics card may be overheating, have you overclocked it? I would suggest you find a program that can check your gpu temp.

I believe I played crysis with the 64bit setting. Its the crysis.exe in the bin64 folder right? If thats the 64bit version, than I had no problem playing it.

Well I have options for higher res, Im just not using them. I tried it at 1680x1050 and it was so laggy. My GPU is not overclocked and the highest it gets to is 65c while playing.

Why did you buy a 4850 when you have a 1680x1050 monitor...i don't care what damn aa and settings you pump in because if your not running a native res anything looks like ass...

Im not sure what you mean. I have a widescreen monitor, whats that got to do with my choice of video card? Im running a Dell 20.1'' widescreen. Crysis looks beautiful on it when its working right.

Reply to JSD13

rewindlabs was trying to tell you back off the AA and change your resolution to 1690x1050, it wil look better than 1280x1024 on that monitor because 1280x1024 is not a widescreen choice

though i think the 4850 should be fine, just leave the AA off or at most 2x when you chenge the resolution

See...i dont about other types of Monitors and TVs but if you dont use the native resolution of an LCD TV (native is highest resolution you monitor technically supports), then it will look horrible, especially in games if you lower your resolution, everything will be blurry, distorted, and overall bad looking, because the monitor has take the smaller resolution and stretch it to fit the screen meaning there will be more spaces between each pixel resulting in jagged lines and other ugly stuff. thats why when you buy a monitor, make sure you get a videocard thats able to play games on it on its maximum resolution otherwise, as a poster above said "it really will look like ass" Also...AA is what kills your card, I bet if you playing on full resolution you would have to turn AA completely off and you wont see a difference meaning you will get better performance.

Yeah some people may not see a difference with or without AA.....but most will....would you like me to draw on every edge of your game with a white pencil

It doesnt look distorted to me on 1280x1024, but I took the AA down to 2x and made it 1680x1050 and it lags a TINY bit but its mostly pretty good.

Well...i dont about you but when on high resolutions, I dont notice AA at all besides the massive hit on my FPS. I even did a test on my friend and I opened up crysis and set AA to none and then put it at 4x and he couldn't tell which one was which. Maybe 16xQ will give you tiny difference but not at really high resolutions.

Agree with the others, keep to the monitors native resoloution, unlike the older CRT displays, LCD panels produce a terrible image when they run below it.
As a general rule for best performance I find it best to leave AA low or off and shadows can also cause a heavy performance hit if set high. Anyone remember FEAR and its softshadows option?

First off...it was 1080p resolution, you wont notice AA if you dont pay really close attention.
Secondly...it wasn't me, as I mentioned it was a friend so I have nothing to worry about :)

Reply to blackhawk1928

Doesn’t matter what resolution you have.

Reply to michaelmk86

If you do a print screen with it on or off you can easily tell a difference...and it of course can depend on the game as well...

Reply to rewindlabs

Well...it kind of does depend on the game, in call of duty world at war, you wont notice, in crysis you might notice more but the higher your resolution, the less you notice.

Reply to blackhawk1928

i never did any AA when im playing crysis. a teeny bit of AA would dramatically hamper performance.

its best to keep up to the highest resolution @ optimal fps. then comes the detail settings, then the AA and AF. thats my hierarchy of graphical needs.

Reply to wh3resmycar

I would agree except put your AF in-front of your AA.

Reply to blackhawk1928

I thing that you try to convince yourself that you don’t need AA, because you don’t have a good graphic card.

Just my opinion.

Reply to michaelmk86

I really dont...I have 8800GTS but am upgrading to a 260 very soon. And AF is more noticeable then AA imo becuase it affects textures not tiny jagged lines. :)

Agreed, I always run with AA off or at the lowest setting quite simply because in a good FPS you are having to move around so much you shouldn't have the time to be focusing on the tiniest little jaggies, if you can then the game is not intense enough and I get bored.

Agreed with that it is better to have AA off and get 60fps instead of AA on and lower fps.

AA is more noticeable than AF. ;)

Reply to michaelmk86

Thats not a fact...thats why I said its my opinion and it depends which games...so stop thinking its fact :)

bilinear filtered textures are more irritating though.

maybe a gtx260-216 is not a good graphics card eh?

crysis is the only game where i dont run AA, the reason being is that i dont wanna compromise the other detail settings.
