First time poster here, looking for help with choosing a new monitor. If I didnt post in the correct section
I apologize, this seemed like the area that made the most sense.

I currently am very happy with my Vizio 42in 1080p HDTV that I have hooked up to my computer for gaming, but next year I will be moving into a house and the tv will be in the common area.

Im looking for a replacement that will not be too expensive (300-400 max) but at the same time fill the void that monitor left. Does anyone have a similar experience and advice on a size I should aim for?

There is no monitor that will come close to that in size. Your resolution will be higher on an lcd monitor so things will look a bit better, But IMO I would go with a 28".

Check Newegg.com and TigerDirect.com. They usually have great sales.

You can't get a quality 28" for 300-400$.

 

What do you know about LCD panels? TN vs. MVA?

 

You're probably looking at 24"-25.5" if you don't care about picture quality, 22"-23" if you do.

 

For example:

Thats crazy how different the prices are between two seemingly identical monitors.

All that i really know is that MVA is better, but LCD companies are avoiding it because not enough people care to effect their sales.

I was thinking about going with something like this -

ASUS VW246H Black 24"

Anything you notice that seems questionable about that model?

See that's a TN panel, which is perfectly fine if you don't care.

 

Only downside I see, it's got 1920x1080 res instead of 1920x1200.

 

1920x1200 is better for computer applications, which you'll most likely be doing on your ... computer, where as 1920x1080 is preferred for HDTV (no black bars when viewing wide screen movies).

 

Goes back to computers using 16x10 aspect ratio whereas tvs use 16x9 aspect ratio.

 

If you decide it doesn't matter (and it's not that big a difference, honestly) then that's as good a choice as any. There are lots of good manufactures of LCD in that range, ASUS, ACER, Samsung, ... there aren't many duds. I'd suggest going to a Best Buy or your equivalent retailer and seeing what floats your boat.

@ stradivarius96: Yes, I hate TN panels;)
My own prejudice aside, I strongly advise you to actually see the monitor you want to buy working.
This is very much the face of the system and will be with you for years to come, spend a little time in picking the right one or, like me, you might very well end up selling it for something better within weeks of purchase.

Thanks so much guys!
Ill make a stop by best buy on the way back and check some out.
Ill try to see the difference of TN but i doubt ill notice it.

"If you don't care about picture quality" you can get a 28" HannsG for $340. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6824254026

Looking at the feedback for this unit (FWIW) the picture quality is decent, and it's a hugely popular monitor.

Might be an option... :)
