Placing physical RAM on Mobo

I put my new rig together a week ago, I've been using RAM in the two slots closest to the Processor.

I've seen, however, that some people put RAM in the first and third slot.

My motherboard comes with 4 total slots for RAM.

What is the ideal location for RAM?

And, since I already have been running with them in slots 1 and 2, is it a problem if I were to change to 1 and 3?

Read the motherboard manual for dual channel configuration, and no, there would be no problems.

to get dual channel mode you need to have matching modules installed in slots of matching color. That will boost your performance slightly as dual channel mode provides higher transfer rates.
