That setup is fairly weak for gaming. Intel p4 is a very old cpu and the 9600gso isnt that strong plus limited to 384mb. You also need more then 1 gig of ram. I would suggest you get a new pc all together, costing around 600$ for a decent build$. If you cant i suggest you upgrade the memory from 1gig to 2-3gig in addition to overclocking the cpu and gpu.

Just curious what games do you play? and at what resolution?

Try to lower your game graphics setting and try to overclock your CPU.

get another 1GB or ram and overclock your CPU if you can, i would not recommend investing any more money into that PC.

I have got a 9600 GSo 512 and it rocks my 19" screen at 1440x900 resolution.See my configuration dude. You need a min. of 2 Gig for Xp and a 2.6 GHz dual core or a 2.2 GHZ quad core for good gaming.

I pieced my rig up piece by piece, You could probably go about doing the same. took me about 3 months, depending on your budget you could hold 100-200 a paycheck and have it built in just a short time.

so whats ur plan to buy now
and what r ur old system specs

Pentium 4 is the main problem. Sure, the 9600GSO is a weak card overall, but still capable for 1024x768.

Processor AMD Phenom II X3 720 BE

Video Radeon 4850 512MB
Motherboard Biostar TForce TA790GX A2+
Memory 4 gig of ozc gaming memory
Hard Drive 640 gb hard drive
Optical Drive any cheapie will work or you can get a blue ray.
Audio
Case Antec Three Hundred ATX Mid Tower
Power Supply BFG Tech LS Series LS-550 550W

you can upgrade/downgrade per your choice but overall it's a sweet machine.

my old machine was probably worse then yours.
