So I got a new battery for my Insprion 8200 after the old one decided to
last only about 5min, but it seems like it's a waste to just throw it away.
Is it worth rebuilding a battery as recent as that one?

Rebuilding Lithium Ion battery packs is both expensive and dangerous. It is
also very easy to build a pack with new cells, but still have it be
non-functional due to bad/failed elctronics in the pack.
We only rebuild Lithium Ion as a last resort. The battery for the Inspiron
8200 is readily available and fairly inexpensive. I sell it in Canada for
$149.00.

$149 is cheap? When you get the computer for a buck, it's prohibitive.
I've been able to find good surplus cells for a quarter each. Match 'em
for ESR, Spot weld
them together and they work fine...assuming you can figure out how to
reset the electronics.
Where can we find information on resetting the pack electronics.
I've been able to reverse engineer and reset packs where the processor
spec sheet is available. When it's a black blob like the Compaq 7770,
I'm in the dark.

Here's a likely contact for you - Pat Hoscoe - and the link to his
company's website. Give him the description of your battery, and he'll
tell ya whether you stand a chance of rebuilding it.
