I have a external Seagate Momentus 5400.6 320 and it has suddenly stoped working.
Symptoms

1. When it trys to send/receive data it beeps at slightly over 1 per second

2. It shows up in
Device manager
SeaTools (USB-1394, Firmware revision 0001, SMART Test unavailable, both generic tests fail, self drive tests pass)
Safely Remove Hardware (USB Mass storage Location 0, "working")

3. Doesnt show up in
Disk Management
My Computer
HDD Unlock Wizard

4. Problem with Shortcut error for shortcuts that lead to the HD.

Whats wrong?

If this external (?) drive gets its power from a USB port, it may be that the port is unable to supply enough power to spin up the drive.

Standard USB ports are current limited to 500mA. Your drive requires about 800mA during spinup. Some USB ports are OK with this, while others are not. In the latter case the problem is solved with a Y-cable that picks up power from two USB ports.

Alternatively, the faint beeps could be a sign of stiction or a seized spindle motor.

See this thread, but heed the warnings:

I have three steps for fixing faulty hard drives:

1) Ensure all cables and power cords going to the drive are plugged in properly.

2) If number one doesn't fix it, run SpinRite on it.

3) If one and two don't help, buy a new drive.
