Installing New CPU-Need thermal compound?

Is using a thermal compound on a new installation an old-school method or should I still do it. It is an AMD Penom II x2 550 BE on a gigabyte board!

All new CPU / HSF installtions require thermal compond to ensure the best possible contact between the CPU and HSF.
