Hard wire internet connection

Hello,
sorry, but I have no idea what a hard wire connection is. I am applying for a work at home job which requires a hard wire connection instead of wireless. I have a desk top and a laptop. I know the laptop is wireless, but no sure about the desktop since it is connected to a modem. How can I get a hardwire connection.
