Ok so, i have a 2.6 ghz duo core, 500 Watt power supply and i have a 9600gt 512mb. I also have a 23 inch monitor and um, i was thinking of buying the radeon hd 4870 1G, but.... do you guys think that i will bottleneck the card with my specifications?

No, personally I think that card will be a nice jump for your system, and shouldn't cause any lag :)
Most games only use dual cores at most, so most are built (the Unreal engine I believe can see more) to run off 2.

The 1GB version will give a boost at higher resolutions. I'm guessing your monitor maybe full HD at 1920x1080? Or the computer monitor equivilent? Or is it still a 1680x1050? If it is the latter, you can happily add some antialising onto games with no FPS issues to smooth out jagged edges :)

Have fun!

It depends on what resolution your display is and what 2.6Ghz dual core you have (A64x2, PII x2, Core2, P4D, etc?).
If you are running at a lower resolution with a weaker CPU, you will have a higher probability of being bottlenecked.
Try and overclock your CPU.
This will give you the maximum performance from any current or future GPU.

Regardless, the 4870 is a much more powerful card than a 9600gt.
Even if you are somewhat bottlenecked, you should be able to maintain a higher minimum frame rate and you will be able to run your games with more eye candy with no performance impact.

you should think about your power supply. according to manufacture spec you need at least a 750 or more to run this card. hey I tried it on a 750 antec and corsair, both blown within like 10 minutes of running and playing games. the demand of power out of the psu is more then 750. get something with a stronger power supply. currently I am running a cooler master 1250watts real power.

anyways enjoy

Any single GPU should work fine with a good 500-600 watt PSU. A Corsair or an Antec 750w should work fine, even with 2 in CF. Your CM 1250 is way overkill.

@final: What brand of PSU do you have? If it's a good brand, then it should work fine. If its a crap no-name brand, get a Corsair, PCP&C, Antec, Seasonic etc..

WEll um... My psu is a Zumax 500W. My native resolution is @ 1920 x 1080. The box on the gpu says that the minimum requirement for the psu is 500W or Greater. So yea.

It should be fine though.
Specs actually say a minimum of a 450watt PSU.

The card should be able to run most games at that resolution no problem, even with full settings, honestly.
