my system specs are as follows:

-ASUS Crosshair III Formula AM3 AMD 790FX ATX AMD Motherboard
-AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz (want to overclock to 3.8)
-mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Dual Channel Kit
-2 his 4890 vid cards (want to overclock to 950 core/ 1100 mem)
-2 hdd's (western digital black and western digital green)
-5 fans total (3 180mm, 2 120mm)
-1 optical drive
-1 floppy drive

i am considering a

http:///www.newegg.com/Product/Pro [...] &Tpk=850hx

or

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817703022

the first i listed is good all around but has less watts and im just concerned that it might not be enough in a highly overclocked situation.

the latter gets better efficiency but not by much and offers more watts, but has a loud fan at loads of 60-70% and up (according to jonnyguru), will the overclocked system i have listed above tax it past the 60-70% point?

also if i decide to go tri fire in the future will these PSU's be enough?

which would you get and why?

850W should be plenty, and both of these PSUs are very good quality. I would personally go for the Corsair simply because it is modular and the PCP&C isn't.

doesnt modularity add extra electrical resistance?

Yes. This might be a problem with a cheapo PSU, but not a Corsair.

This is my current favorite as it is with others given the numbe rof Editopr's Choice ratings garnered. Extremely clean power, vid cars on separate 12v rails and 5 year warranty. If it had nicer cables and a 120mm fan, I'd say it would be hard to improve upon:

"This power supply would be perfect for anyone looking to build a quad core system with multiple video cards. It also is SLi Certified for up to two GeForce GTX280 GPU's! At around $200, this power supply is a bit pricey for a 850 Watt power supply, but the premium quality and performance makes up for all of it. Overall, this is a truly one of a kind power supply and should be purchased by anyone looking for extreme efficiency, amazing output performance and one of the best power supplies on the market."

Personally, I'd get this:

Every unit mentioned on this thread is amazing though, and you'd be hard pressed to go wrong with any of them (though apparently, the PC P&C is a bit loud when heavily loaded).

In the price range you are looking at, might as well get the Corsair 1000HX for $220.
Internally it is a 1500W PSU so it will defiantly have no issues running your system.

Honestly though, as long as you have a 750w+ Corsair, Seasonic, PCP&C or Antec Earthwatts PSU you will have more than enough power.

If you don't need all 1000W though, the Corsair HX850 has lower ripple and better efficiency.

Less than the resistance of the cable. In other words, nothing to worry about.

What would I get? I would consult the latest technical reviews for the latest and greatest power supplies.

It looks like some retailers have been working on improving the quality of the power supplies they are offering. Lately I've been seeing very favorable technical reviews for brands that were almost never recommended by the veteran posters. It looks like competition is heating up.
