I'm helping a friend look through some laptop options. As part of our "research", I would like to ask anyone here what the desktop "equivalent" of the 9400M is, in terms of performance. I'm assuming that it is of course similar to the 9400 GT, but I'm also wondering what was scaled back for the sake of mobility.

Usually clock speed / shader amounts are bagged to save power and heat.

You can also visit NVIDIA's website, get the specs of the 9400M, and look for another card that's similar specs-wise.
