Long delay coming out of Screen Blank on Thinkpad T20 in W..

I still think my IBM Thinkpad T20 is a great machine over 3 years down
the road. Having upgrade RAM, HDD, and OS (to Windows XP), I am
noticing long delays returning to a visible screen either after it
blanks, or waking up from suspend mode--it seems like it can be 60
seconds or more. I installed various updates which seemed to solve
the problem, but a few days later it was back to the same old thing.

I notice that sometime (most of the time?) when I hit a key, I can
then see extremely faint images on the screen but there's then a delay
to coming back to a brightness that actually works.

Hope you have an idea!
