Hey, I've recently had a fault with my graphics card, so really want a replacement. Which is the best compatible graphics card I can buy?

Budget, resolution you plan on using, whether you plan to game or not/games you plan to play, brand preference/requirement, etc.

The idea is to get the best one available for game playing, but the concern that due to motherboard limits the top of the range graphics card might not be adding anything extra compared to something a little bit cheaper.

Yes, fine.
But we need to know: CPU, PSU (+12v output/s), monitor resoloution and budget.
