Win xp 32 bit to win 8 pre to win 8

I just built my first PC yesterday, and I knew I had a copy of windows around, but unfortunately it was xp 32 bit. I know with microsoft's 39.99 upgrade to windows 8 pro you can't go straight from 32 bit xp to 64 bit win8. So I was wondering if I could find an old download of the windows 8 preview release and download that in 64 bit, then upgrading to win 8 pro 64 bit over that. Can somebody tell me if this can be done? Thanks

Follow the directions here on another computer with a 64 bit version of windows and burn the disk to do a clean install on yours.
