Hi All,

Below is my current spec:

CPU: e5200 @3.63GHz
MB: P45 UD3LR
Ram: generic 4GB DDR2 800
GPU: ATI 4650 OCed abit

I have been asked to build another PC for relatives that doesnt need much performance and i was thinking to let them canibalize my machine so i can upgrade my parts.

I dont do much gaming, most of my activities involving multitasking like photoshopping, video converting, etc and web development.

What parts will do most gain to me (CPU or Ram) i want to get best bang for buck.
If its CPU will it really jump it to get 4 Cores (Q6600 or Q9400) or 2 cores (e7500 or e8XXX) and give me cheap best recommendation. Notice that i still to intend OC them later on.

If it ram, can you recommend me which will go well with the system ?

Hello and welcome to the forums :)
You have a great rig,the only thing i WAS going to recommend u upgrading it was your VGA but since u don't game much then there is no need to do,u have a great CPU,a CD2 @ 3.6 can handle everything fine, your RAM is good too,4GB is enough for everything too,i don't recommend upgrading anything for now,do u have any problems with your CPU ? is it slow for what u do ? i don't think so because as i said its pretty fast.

Since you mention photoshop and video converting, my first instinct would be to go with a cheap, OCable quad, but you'd be best to check how well your software multi-threads.

Go for a Quad, then you would be able to convert a movie while doing photoshop. (Though that might load your hdisk heavily)

would jumping to quad wagon will give me significant performance boost ?

what would be best bang for back for quad q6600 or q9400 ?

It really depends on how u work with PS,because your current CPU is good, but u will benefit from Quad core in them too,it mostly depends on what u do,between a Q6600 and a Q9400,the difference isn't much,Q6600 has more cache but has is 200MHZ slower and has 1066MHZ FSB(Compared to 1333 of Q9400)so go for the one which is cheaper

With PS, it depends on what you do.

With video encoding, if your software properly supports quad-cores then you could possibly cut the encoding time in half.

With web development, even a dual-core would do.
