Forum Storage : Hard Drives Maxtor 3200 personal storage not recognized on plug and play on Vista operating

I lost my hard drive on my old computer and replaced it with a Dell with Vista. When I plug in the Maxtor Personal Storage 3200, it is not recognized.
I have tried looking for help to download drivers, but don't understand some of the "Computereze" that is on some of the web sites.

Have you tried plugging in the external first than booting the PC?

If that works, I would say your system is set up as IDE, which isn't designed for "hot swap" functions.

that doesnt make sense. with a usb hard drive its not ESATA.

If it doesnt work on any computer I'd say the power supply is going
that seems to be popular if you google it.

It should be detected and just work with vista.

so..

step one try it on another computer

step two, try unplugging and plugging in the power supply from wall while the druve us plugged into computer.

Rand, 79,
I tried shutting down the computer, pluging in the External hard drive, and then starting up the computer and it still does not recognize the drive. I also unplugged the power source and re-plugged it into power and it makes the noise that corresponds with the end and beginning of plug in. Does it need a drive mapped?
