APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: 1 or 2 weeks BUDGET RANGE: 500-800 Canadian

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: movies, internet, games

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: monitor, speakers

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: ncix.com

PARTS PREFERENCES: none really

OVERCLOCKING: No

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: No

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1920 X 1080
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: "Cool" looking case, ie window with light perhaps. Quiet as it will be in the living room, though no need for absolute silence. No htpc cases please, ATX would be ideal.

So basically, my friend feels its time to get a new pc as his laptop is 6 years old. Mainly wants to use it to watch movies/tv etc on his TV in the living room, and maybe some light gaming (older or PC only games as he uses his xbox 360)

Looking at NCIX I put together this:

Gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H AMD780G ATX AM2+/AM3 2PCI-E Video Sound GLAN CrossFireX HDMI Motherboard

Crucial Rendition 2GB 1X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 240PIN DIMM Memory

LG GH22NS30 Black DVD+RW 22X8X16 DVD-RW 22X6X16 DL 16X/12X 2MB SATA OEM

Nothing set in stone, but he would like the case to look somewhat like the Apollo. I think the power supply may be overkill but I wanted to make sure it was decent quality with perhaps upgradability. Was hoping onboard video and sound would be good enough, but if anyone has experience with this particular board please let me know. My idea was we could add a video card/sound card on as needed.

Thanks for your opinions!

You wouldn't need that 650W Corsair, even the 450W Corsair would do fine. It'll save some money. What games does he usually play? That IGP HD3200 might not be enough.

I Have few suggestions...

1. CPU - Get this CPU, it would be more powerful than that CPU,

2. Case - has $30 Mail-In-Rebates
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E1681...

3. Mobo -
The 780G might be weak on gaming...Get a 790GX with onboard 128MB vRAM...It would be far more powerful...

4. PSU +1 for Corsair 450W but even the Corsair CX400 is more than suffice...

Looking at some more cpu reviews, I wonder if I should use something like the Intel e5200 at the same price, seems to perform better, and is easily OC'ed for some additional performance. My only concern would be fan noise, how does that compare to the AMD solution. (assuming stock fan)

Edit: looking more into it, I realize that the Mobo choices are not as good for intel solution, hard to find HDMI out, Optical out, also the IGP is less powerful.
