Forum Windows XP : Configuration & Customization HP a810n lost usb & cd/dvd

My old HP a810n recently stopped showing the CD reader, DVD/CD writer, half of the USB ports, and the Mem Stick readers. They no longer show up in Device Manager, or in the BIOS setup in DOS. The BIOS display is messed up also: the top half of the display shows on the bottom of the screen and the bottom half shows up on the top of the screen. Any ideas as to problem, or diagnosis/fix would be greatly appreciated. Everything was working fine until recently. No new instals or changer other than MS updates and Mcafee updates.....

Not to point fingers, but Ms Update has been known to cause issues, upon occassion. Best to change settings to download & notify vs auto update, so you can choose when to install, and backup system beforehand.

I would try safe mode, last known good configuration, or run
sfc /scannow from command prompt (supposed to repair system files,) or repair from Windows CD.
