APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Summer BUDGET RANGE: $350-$450

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Gaming Server, Media Server, Third "Gaming" PC (lowww end)

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: KB/M, Monitor, Vid Card (have spare 9500GT)

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg, not really crucial... cheapest.

PARTS PREFERENCES: none

OVERCLOCKING: Maybe, not priority SLI OR CROSSFIRE: No

MONITOR RESOLUTION: 1280 x 1024

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS: Will be used primarily for game server, although it wouldn't hurt to have it capable of more. Just don't want to spend a lot, have 2 more than adequate gaming rigs.

My ISP speeds are very good - 24mb down and 8.5mb up.

I was thinking of this build:

CPU: E5200 (69.99) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819116072

Memory: Crucial Ballistix 2 x 2gb DDR2 800 (42.00) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820148212

Mobo: ECS 610i micro or similar (46.99) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6813135064

HDD: Seagate 500GB (49.99) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6822148395

Case: Cooler Master RC-690 - a little overkill(69.99) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811119137

DVD: any $22

PSU: HEC Orion 585W - Had in another build, was solid (34.99) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817339001

Windows Server 2003 - 99.99

Total: ~$436.00

It's it bit at the high end of my budget, any suggestions on getting the cost down some or opinions of the build?

1: don't get aan ECS board, get a good brand eg ASUS,GIGABYTE
2: get a quality PSU like Corsair or Seasonic (a corsair 400w would be plenty/overkill)
3: you don't need (and possibly want) a server OS, XP would be fine, or if you want to savve some money use windows 7
4: i doubt you need perforance ram like that, get G.Skill without the heat spreaders
5: i don't think you would even be able to do light gaming on that machine without a GPU

I have a 9500GT 1gb for light gaming. Should be fine for 1280 x 1024.
The HEC is cheap and ran an e6750, 8800GT set up until I went SLI and needed to upgrade. Wouldn't be too worried about the peak load on it since the PC likely will sit in the closet (running server) most of the time. Just realized that was kinda an oxymoron - what I mean is that I would be only pushing 200W of the 585W and should be fine.
The tiny price difference between performance and cheap DDR2 800 makes me want to get the better RAM... wouldn't the faster RAM help with the server also?

I hear you on the ECS, don't trust it - could probably drop the extra $10 on a GB.
Will Windows 7 be compatible with most game server software (no experience with 7 yet)
