Or transfer your data to another drive or USB stick, which is the same idea in a nutshell, that Pyree wrote down for u already.

nikorrs idea is better as a result of its being a lot safer, win7 has been known to delete partitions during installation, although I suspect it is mostly user error.

you are correct it is human error that does that

people dont check the partition sizes so they dont use there data partition

ive reinstalled a few times without losing any data of my other partition. still best to backup though

simplist solution is go down somewhere like pcworld and buy an external hard drive, copy all your important data to it

if you have a local computer shop near you then you can buy a 3.5" external drive (the really big ones that need a power lead)

there a lot cheaper and perfect to leave at your desk

Normally. when you do a new fresh install with Win7 ,it will save all your old data in a file(by default,if that partition have the system file in),named Windows old, in the same partition.Of course, if you intend to (re)install the OS,by doing the "PC format". You are not formating the PC, but the hard drive partition ... :)  Just be careful when you do the installation of Win 7 and read, i mean READ, the instructions and understand what you are doing. For safety, anyway, make a backup of your files in some other partition, like the other guys described in the other posts.
