Does anyone know for a fact whether you can use 512mb SODIMMS in a
Thinkpad A20p? I know the official spec is 256k maximum per sodimm
(512m total capacity), but those specs are often wrong. For example,
the 770 and 240 claim to take a maximum sodimm size of 128M but they
in fact will accept 256M sodimms, so you can have 512MB in a 770.

Also, can I use PC133 sodimms in a PC100 laptop?

Thanks.

I dont know what the stated capacity of the A20 is, but you can find PC100 only
256MB sodimms. The only reason the 770 and 240 listed 256 total was that 128's
were the largest SODIMM size when they were manufactured.

Stick with PC100 only, anyone who tells you PC133 will fall down to PC100 speed
is lying.

the BX chipset used in the A20p handles only 256MB per memory bank.
researched this a while ago but don't have the link handy right now (I
think it was on intel.com somewhere).

No, the A20 won't take 512MB SO-DIMMs. The A20, like a lot of other
Thinkpads from that era, is built on the Intel 440BX chipset which has an
inherent limitation of 256MB per memory slot. There is _no_ way around this
limitation.

Depends on the specific laptop, but in general the answer is no. Thinkpads,
in particular, that are spec'ed for PC100 memory will usually fail to start
with PC133 memory installed.

I definitely agree. PC133 SDRAM will rarely work in Thinkpads or Armadas
that require PC100 SDRAM. To make matters worse, even the PC100 SDRAM
must be compatible with your laptop, otherwise it would fail to start. I
tried about 6 256Mb modules before I could find one that would work in
my old Armada M700.

That's because the Armada is also built on the same Intel 440BX chipset as
most Thinkpads of that era and, like them, requires lo-density (32X64) 256MB
sticks.

Most generic 256MB sticks you'll see are high-density with 4 memory chips
per side, rather than the 8 chips per side required by the M700 and the
Thinkpads.

James
