Finally activated Tivo without phone

Thanks to all those that gave me some valuable input on how how to do
this. I'm hoping this is a one time thing. I bought a wired USB router
and hooked it up used the ,#401 and it worked perfectly. Now that it's
registered its ok if I can return the wired one back to Best Buy right?
Would I ever need this again?

Best Buy is not a rental company. You cannot (..well..should not) return
something just because "you only needed it once".

So? You have a valid credit card that was given to rent the equipment,
charge the card for replacement.

FWIW, BB is certainly not the epitome of an upstanding business WRT the
damn protection plans they push on EVERY item, including a $15 mouse! I
have had mixed success with them honoring such things. For a $100 item,
no sweat but a $1000 notebook is another story entirely.

Assuming you were referring to notebook computers, who would provide
software applications needed on a "weekend" computer? People who use
laptop computers on aircraft have spent more time customizing the computer
than the average flight would take. Some businesses have computer techs
who do application installations and the user has minimal knowledge of such things.

If he's already willing to use archaic technology like Tivo instead of
a cable DVR then non-stop bitching by Tivo shouldn't bother him too
much.
