Advice please, processor upgrade

Hi guys, question for you..

I have a HP DC5700 with intel Q965 chipset, socket 775LGA. Current processor Pentium D 915 2.8Ghz 800Mhz FSB.

Im wondering what my options are for upgrading the processor? Can I choose any socket 775 processor (Core 2 Duo for example) or do I have to stick the the Pentium D chips only? Also am I limited to 800Mhz FSB only?

From reading this page about Q965 on intel site it looks like I can choose from a large range of processors but I dont want to buy anything without getting some advice first..

Here's a screendump of my system from CPU-Z

P.S. Im not using this system for gaming, I just want to get the fastest processor in there to run particular software. If I can get a quad processor in this motherboard that would be the holy grail!

I also updated the Bios, the HP update says "Adds new Intel Pentium 4 Processor microcode for 6F6, 6F2, 6FD, and 10661 steppings." Does that help?

Cheers!

Intel says it'll support Core 2 Duo (but does not mention C2Quad).

    On this page:

    http://ark.intel.com/chipset.aspx?familyID=22756

Intel says it'll support the Core 2 Duo E6700 (highest I could find after scrolling through list)

    They list C2D E4300, E4400, E4500, E4600, E4700, E6320, E6420, E6300, E6400, E6600, E6700

Under the E6700 CPU Intel shows:

    Quote:

    Intel® Q965 Express Chipset
    3 Configurations

    *
    Intel® Q965 Express Chipset with 82801HB I/O Controller Hub 8 (ICH8)
    o # of CPUs: 1
    o Embedded: No
    o System Price: N/A
    o System TDP: 96.7W
    *
    Intel® Q965 Express Chipset with 82801HO I/O Controller Hub 8 (ICH8DO)
    o # of CPUs: 1
    o Embedded: No
    o System Price: N/A
    o System TDP: 96.7W
    *
    Intel® Q965 Express Chipset with 82801HR I/O Controller Hub 8 (ICH8R)
    o # of CPUs: 1
    o Embedded: No
    o System Price: N/A
    o System TDP: 96.7W

  2. It appears the E6700 has been discontinued by Intel. Therefore, finding one online is going to be more expensive.

Found the E6700 for about $200

The E6600 for $145 at cheapest. (and not from a reputable e-tailer either)

You can buy a new i5-750 for $200 (though you'd need new RAM, Motherboard, probably power supply, etc).
  3. Ok guys, thanks for this. The intel link showing supported chips is very useful. I am actually in the UK so I will hunt down somewhere to find the chip over here.

    Thanks again!
