I was told that the 4850 would be my best choice, but is there a specific one? Is there one brand to steer clear of?

Yes that 4850 is a good choice...

But just a heads up...though that 4850 would be suffice for that resolution, you might not be able to play all the current games @ max settings...You can upgrade to this card, which would best suit that resolution...but would be about $150 with Free Shiiping + $10 Mail-In-Rebate...
