Hello all,

It has been some time since I last upgraded and I'm currently looking to do it again.

This computer will be for gaming. My budget will be around $400(willing to expand) and I'm looking to get the most bang for my buck. Keep in mind I have little to no knowledge of overclocking, etc. so budget items that need to be tampered with are probably not for me. My goal is to get at least a quad core machine that is capable of playing most new games with decent frame rates at 1440 x 900 resolution.

This is what I am currently looking at, including some of the things I am currently using:

Motherboard: BIOSTAR TForce TP45HP LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.33GHz LGA 775 95W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80580Q8200
Memory: G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK
Case: RAIDMAX SMILODON ATX-612WBP Black 1.0mm SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Foldout MB Computer Case With 500W Power Supply
Power supply: Sunbeam PSU-HUSH680-US 680W ATX 12V 2.0 Power Supply
GPU: EVGA 256-P2-N761-TR GeForce 8600 GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card

Things italicized I already own and felt that they serve me well enough for my current purposes.

Things in bold I would have to buy. On NewEgg, they total out to about $350. Which I felt was pretty good for what I was getting.

If you could comment on the set-up I'm planning or recommend a better setup for the money, please do so!

Thank You in Advance.

Forget about the 1066 memory, and go with DDR 800 (6400). G.SKILL, Mushkin, or Corsair preferably.

You can do better.

Keep the RAM if you like

Get an AMD X4 940. It's faster than the Q8200 and this combo is less than you are paying:

AMD boards are commonly less expensive.

You can't skimp on the PSU. It's a very important part of your system and that one is trash. If you want something that will let you upgrade to a crossfire build later, then get this

If you want a quality PSU more in line with your current build, then all you need it one of these:

Why go to 800 memory? What's the advantage?

Now for PSU, I have a quality 500W now. I figured I would need a higher wattage with a quad core, if not will I be ok with what I plan too run?

800Mhz if it's an Intel build, because faster RAM does nothing unless there's a big overclock.

1066 for AMD builds because there is a benefit.

If it's an actual good 500W, you don't need to upgrade it until you get two cards or a very large single GPU.

OK cool, do you think the 8600GTS is going to be enough for newly released/upcoming games? I just got Prototype and am looking forward to getting Red Faction.

Well, enough is a relative term. It's a pretty weak gaming card in my book, but it will probably play any title on reduced settings.

A 4850 would be a big improvement.

Ok thanks a lot, is there anything else you would recommend?

Only that you could get by better with an X3 720 for your price range. You don't need a quad core for any game currently, and most games don't make use of quads. Those that do run fine on less cores.

An X3 720 costs a great deal less and will get the job done.

There's a combo for 220.

Add RAM

And you are only at 275

Now you could afford that new GPU:

There you have a much better performing rig. Add a cooler when you can:

For some moderate overclocking (when you are ready) and you have a very strong rig.
