OCZ StealthXStream OCZ700SXS 700W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply

It looks like a steal at $85 - $20 mail-in rebate. I don't know a whole lot about PSU's, but I take it that >85% efficiency at 700W is not bad. I can't read amperes though :(

Here's the proposed system it would be running:
CPU: Core i5 750 (OC'd to about 3.2-3.4 GHz)
MB: MSI P55-GD65 LGA 1156
GPU: 2xHD5870 (just 1 for now, but I want to make sure that I could add a 2nd)
RAM: GSKILL Trident DDR3 2000 (4GB)
HDD: SSD OCZ Vertex 60GB and Maxtor 320GB 7200 RPM (both SATA)
DVD: Liteon 24x DVD RW (SATA)
CASE: Antec 902 (3x120mm fans and 1x200mm fan)

From what I've read, it seems like the new GPU's and CPU's are actually an improvement in power efficiency, but I'd really like to know for sure that the PSU can handle it. Thanks in advance!

Until the cards are officially out, we really won't know their true power requirements. IMO, I wouldn't run crossfire with higherend cards under 750 watts. You maybe fine at 700w but it isn't enough "overhead" for my liking.

I checked my usual references and came up with the following technical review for the OCZ power supply:

http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/397

The technical review indicates the psu is not not exactly a stellar high quality unit.

The genral rule of thumb is a high quality 700 to 750 watt power supply with sufficient current (amps) on the 12 volt rail(s) can handle two video cards operating in dual mode.

You might want to consider the Antec Truepower New 750W. Here is a link to a technical review:

You also might want to consider the Corsair TX750. Here is a link to a technical review:

You are correct about some improvements in energy efficiency. I think we will see more improvements. AMD, Intel, and a few other manufacturers are in a race to develop 32nm technology.

Time to get back to Monday Night Football.

Thanks! I've looked at some reviews before posting, but couldn't quite apply them because they seemed to use GeForce 7xxx or 8xxx series GPU's in SLI, but it seemed like everyone was praising it. I suppose I could pony up a bit more for a better supply if this one is really not up to par. What's the difference between these two?

Antec TruePower New TP-750 Blue 750W Continuous Power ATX12V V2.3 / EPS12V V2.91 SLI Certified CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC "compatible with Core i7" Power Supply - Retail

I only see the word blue added in the second one, but it's $35 more. It's not just because of the blue LED, is it?!

Edit: Never mind, it seems that it's really the LED. I read a review saying that those are the two versions: one plain and one with LED, and they were originally separated by $10 in price. I guess one is just discounted more than other. I'm not paying $35 for an extra LED in my case though! Ridiculous!

Yes, $35.00 more for the blue LED fan plus shipping.

But wait! There's more! Newegg.com is offering free shipping for the Truepower New without the blue LED fan which makes it an even better deal:

haha, thanks Johnny Lucky. I think I'll just go with this combo then (I had my Antec 902 bundled with Vista + Win 7 coupon before, but this gives better combo discount)

So, would you estimate that Antec Truepower New 750W will be fine for my system configuration (assuming 2 5870's)?

Reply to hellario

That's a nice combo price and shipping is free!

I have not seen any technical reviews or power consumption charts for any 5000 series cards. As tecmo correctly pointed out we will not know the actual power requirements until the cards become available for testing. Therefore I cannot make any estimate. However with four 12 volt rails rated at 25 amps each that should be more than enough to power a system with two video cards.

Great news! I think I'm just going to go ahead and order tonight, then get the GPU separately next week. I'll just put in my old 8800GT in there for now :)

I'm saving $70 in combo discounts alone, another $67 in instant discounts, $30 in mail-in rebates, and the shipping for the whole PC minus GPU is ~$12! :)

Sucks that I have to pay tax though :(
