Hello, I'm putting together a new PC for my grandfather and it's been a while since I've done so. I just wanted one of you system building experts to go over my shopping list and see if anything brings up a red flag. You know, check and make sure everything will gel well and everything is compatible.

Here's the list:

Everything seems fine except the vista basic and the ecs motherboard, they are pretty decent but you can find more reliable brands at the same price (like asus and gigabyte) you wanna spend more money and get a better version of vista even though your grandpa is probably not a power user you wanna make sure he does not get limited by the limitations of vista basic which are many. The graphics are fine too you can probably find good deals on the 4650 if you look around but thats not nessecary your grandad would be fine even wih integrated graphics. If you need more help i can do some research for you later on and let you know about some good deals around

PSUs come in varying degrees of quality, rosewills are on one end, Corsair, Antec, Seasonic and a few others make up the other end. This PSU is slightly more expensive but significantly higher quality.

Also there are lots of performance upgrades that could be made for slightly more what budget are you working with and what does he intend to do with it?

better processor , later mb chipset and integrated gfx so grandpa doesnt need a gfx card

and best of all its only $119

He actually does quite a bit with importing his own footage off of his digital camcorder and editing it. He doesn't need a gaming rig, just something that will allow him to view and edit various kinds of media (he's a fairly tech savvy old guy).

Also, that motherboard recommended above only accepts DDR2 1066 does it not?

Thats the fastest ram it supports . Your 800 MHz kit will be fine

It is a lot faster processor than your first build . Some people wont like the onboard gfx but theyre nearly as good as the original gfx card .
It is a m-atx mb which limits expansion a bit but it will fit an atx case and not many people do use all the slots in a mb anyway

Hey, thanks for the help Outlander!

Regarding the earlier comment about Rosewill PSUs... I've had a Rosewill PSU running my machine for a couple years now. Been pretty good to me, but that's just one individual case study. Are they typically not a good brand to go for? Should I consider looking for something a little better?

Outlanders rule #1 for psu's

only buy a psu that has ACTIVE PCF

this is a much better smoother voltage regulation .
I have never seen a rosewill psu , but generally you get what you pay for and a stable computer needs good clean power .
A rig like this is only going to need 400 watts max so a decent psu shouldnt cost too much
The corsair Hunter mentions is good , and only a bit more than the rosewill after rebate

Look at the Antec300 case/ power supply combos, very close to your case- power supply in cost, but higher quality.

Also don't overlook the prebuilts for him. Has all but the GPU. Get a HD4650, fine for prebuilt PSUs.

Thanks, I think I have a good rig set up for him now! All the help was greatly appreciated. (I ended up going with that Antec power supply combo deal and dropping the rosewill)
