Hey everyone

I bought a tivo from BBY, had a HD failure w.in a month. It was a
floor model, so I didn't exactly want to take it back as BBY would have
required a refund, not an exchange.

I had an option to have tivo replace it under warranty, but things got
swept away, and I'm definately outside any 90day warranty on the
hardware now.

My HD is toast...it makes clickin noises.

Since I don't have a backup, I figured it was basically junk. It
occured to me however that it might be possible to use a new HD that i
got on sale in the device, if it were possible to use it with some open
source Linux media center software.

Is there anything like this available for my tivo? I've done a variety
of searches for software replacements but if it's out there, I seem to
be missing the right keywords.

Any pointers, either to software, or to junk it and save some time,
would be appriciated.

Thanks,

EK

No need to junk it, HD replacements are no big deal. Check out
www.ptvupgrade.com, you can either buy a preformatted hard drive or
(far-cheaper) an HD image to place on an HD you provide.

Replacing the HDD is easy. Finding an image for it, if you don't already
have a viable backup, is slightly less so.

You can either beg an OS image for your TiVo model from someone else, or
buy the $20 Instant Cake CD for your model from www.ptvupgrade.com.

You might be able to procure an image from someone on the TCF at
www.tivocommunity.com. Then again, it's probably quicker to just buy the
Instant Cake.

As for using the TiVo as a general-purpose Linux machine--not really
doable, not in a practical sense.

I watch too much TV, but no one cares except my wife.

Usenet was here long before Google acquired Deja News and decided to put
their brand name on something they don't own.

So God should love Usenet, of course.
