I have a redundant MSI K9A2 CF motherboard which I'd like to drop a Athlon II X3 435 into. Now the board makes a big deal about being AM3 ready, but the CPU isn't listed on the CPU support list.

Does this mean It wont work, or just hasnt been tried by MSI. I was wondering whether to wing it...or not?

well, it might work on the board, it might work at 800MHz max, it might not work at all

i used to have an ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe and there is a group of people that were able to get the Phenom II's working on the board (both the AM2+ and AM3)

so maybe do some google searching and see if you can find anyone with AM3 preocessors working on your board
