I was curious what is a better processor:

AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz

or the

AMD Phenom II X3 720 2.8GHz 3 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Triple-Core Black Processor

I play demanding games on my pc and would like to know which processor would be better and why.

I will be using the GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AM3 AMD 770 ATX AMD Motherboard

Well, the 720 is better for some existant games and soon-to-be-raleased games. The 400mhz speed difference could be easily overcome by upping the 720's multiplier a bit; and I don't expect it to need mcuh extra voltage or cooling to get it to 3/3.1/3.2 GHz (but this is just my guess).
I know nothing about RAM ;)

all rams are on 1.5v, so u can probably get them to 1600 Mhz and with better latencies with 1.75v.

the 720 is a pure beast, u can overclock it with stock voltage very easy on that board. nice choice.

I'd go for the 720. You could always overclock, but it isn't everyday that you could add a core*.

* I know of the core unlocking, but that is a hit or miss kinda thing.

+1 For the 720.

As was said, overclocking is easy, adding extra (stable) cores is not.
That third core can defiantly help when gaming, if only to handle all the background processes.

+1 for the 720. For future and performance. Read the tom's hardware article when they said that between 2 and 3 cores exist a good difference.

I agree on the 720
