Hi so i just built my new rig, specs:

i7 920 2.6
Asus p6T deluxe v2 x58
WD 1tb Caviar black
XFX GTX285 Black edition OC
LG dvd writer
Coolermaster HAF 932
Corsair 1000W modular
coolermaster V8 cpu cooler
sony black internal memory reader
OCZ 1600 ddr3 platinum 6gb kit
Windows vista 64bit home premium win 7 upgrade
toshiba 16gb thumbdrive :P
NXZT sentry 2

I bought the i7 920 because i planned to OC it. Im getting idle core temps
of 38 - 48 degrees celcius at the stock settings (i just installed it in my Mobo along with V8 cooler/ thermal paste, nothing else altered). Did i mount my v8 wrong? here are screenies of Core temp and CPU-Z + Asus PC Probe

Please advise, i think my case has good enough airflow (HAF 932) so yea... pls let me know Thanks.

Well the reason why it's at 2.8 ghz is because of turbo boost. it can overclock itself slightly by as much as 233 mhz. which fits perfectly with what you seeing.

2. i think those idle temps are perfectly normal. although if you do think you have a temp problem then run prime95 for while to see what you load temps are. this will truly tell if you have a temp problem. If the load temps are going above 70c (although most people will say 80c) then you may want to check the fan is properly placed in. anything above 80 means your cpu is not being cooled properly.

lets just say this compared to my Prescott P4 temps those temps are chilly. you max idle temp 48c, mines is about 56c with side planel off and having a twin window fan blowing cool air and and hot air out. yours and mine cpu can handle some really hot temps.

hmm ok in the screenie i don't know why the cpu load % is that high, im only on the browser and right now its only 1%-4%, i must have caught a spike. The temps are the same though.

First, for a V8 aren't those temps about average? The V8 is a great LGA775 cooler but fails at keeping an i7 under control. Truthfully, those might be the correct temps for that heatsink. Especially if you slightly overclocked it to 2.8GHz, the temps are gonna rise right off the bat.

Nevertheless, there could have been a number of things that has happened.

1. You could've mounted the heatsink wrong.
This is not very likely if the heatsink is secure to the board and to the cpu but still a possiblity.
2. Low quality thermal compound.
If you used the thermal compound that came with the heatsink, that could be a factor.

Order this from frozencpu. It is more conductive and produces lower temps than Arctic Silver 5.

3. Wrong fan configuration.
You said you have a HAF case so if you haven't changed any of the push/pull orientations on the fans you shouldn't have this problem. If you added fans, make sure the airflow makes sense.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

cool thanks for the reply, im not sure why im getting 2.8 GHz! i havent overclocked ANYTHING i dont even know how to...

anyways.. i think ill try to remount.

Thanks for the reply, i just installed prime95 and selected torture test. Which one do i do? theres 4 options

Small FTTs
In-Place Large FTT's
Blend test
Custom.

please advise thanks.

set it to in place large fft. this will stress cpus to the max and will cause lots of heat.

been running for around 15 mins

so i guess theres nothing wrong then? or should i run it for longer?

also if everythings alright, how much do you think i could OC this too. Im still researching and learning how to OC but when i get to it, what do you think i can get outta my chip with my comp being stable + with my current cooling etc.

if the temps are still increasing then i say wait little bit longer but overall i think the temps are good.

Now for overclocking the i7, i dont know how much you'll be able to increase it.

All i can say is increase the multiplier in small increments until you gotten your desired speed. If you find windows unable to boot then increase your voltage. (be warned: as you may already know temps will increase when you over clock it.)

hope this helps.

thanks for the help, ~30 mins and temps are stabilized around 65.

No problem. Glad i to be of service.

Have you set the affinities for each test window?
Each instance can test only 2 threads and the CPU doesn't set affinities automatically.
By the time i opened the inbox and got here your problem was already solved! And thanks to warmon6 but as a side Q the title says it's solved but no best answer is selected!!

V8 sucks on the I7. Need the V10

------------------------------ Core I7 920 D0 @ 4.2Ghz
MSI X58 Pro-E
32GB SSD, WD Blacks In R0
Sapphire HD 5870's In XFire

The V10 sucks even more.

You want a Megahalem or Ultra Extreme 120 Rev C if you're OCing to 4GHz, Titan Fenrir or Scythe Mugen 2 if you're topping at 3.6 or 3.8

No no no. I meant that the title said it's solved but no best answer was visible to me!! (The trophy thing and the yellow background)
I meant no offense or anything :D
