Packard bell server/htpc

Hi all,

i've got an old packard bell istart which i want to turn into a home server/htpc.
Specs are;

3Ghz pentium d
1gb ram
ati xpress 1100 graphics card
think the psu is 500W but not sure
160gb 7200rpm hard drive

prob is the system runs very loud at the moment. are their any ways to quieten it (heard about removing fans and soldering resistors in their place but would it overheat?)
