hey i got the 6970 direct cu 2 and have clocked it to 950MHz memory speed is the same what would be a safe speed to push it too ive heard of people that have pushed it too over1100mhz but is that safe and whats the difference in performance? plus how efficient is water cooling?

Before you OC further, flash the BIOS of the card to that of the 6990. That's the beauty of this card, you can get 6990 performance from the 6970, simply by flashing its BIOS to the higher card's. It has dual-BIOS, so if it fails you can simply reset back to factory settings.

Hows that even possible, the 6970 is a single gpu , the 6990 is dual gpu?

Sure you aint thinking of the 6950 bios flash to 6970 ?

Simply use an overclocking tool such as MSI afterburner, slowly increase the clocks by 10mhz increments and do a benchmark, look for artifacts, if you get any or its unstable then lower the clocks slightly.

You cant really go wrong, its when you start messing with voltages is when it can damage your card. You will gain a few extra fps in games, it really depends on which. Its worth doing to get that extra bit of power.

Water cooling is good and can help get temps low. But you can use a program to manually control the fan speed of the 6970 to get the temps right. As long as you have good case airflow, this is no problem really.

Its when you have crossfire 6970's like me, is when the top card gets to 80+ because they touch each other, have to run fans at 100%, sounds like a jet fighter, need ear plugs.

thats what i thought lol and yes i have sounds like its gonna take off lol but yeah got great air flow cables are all managed well the case i got is the haf 932 so plenty of room nothing is near the card so that helps keep it cool too do you have the direct cu 2 version?

That good then, you will be fine oc it, I have the asus reference 6950, but flashed to 6970. Lol, same cards pretty much, I got a haf x, good case but the cards are literally touching each other, might invest in some water cooling or a bigger mobo so I can space them out a bit more.

It seems I've been corrected... :)

Yes, it's the 6950 to the 6970. I don't know where I got the 6990 thing from, but It's clearly incorrect. Ignore me! :/
